After a few more hours of conversation and food, Corey and Air said their goodbyes and left the house. Despite the awkwardness and brief moment of heartbreak, Air felt satisfied by how that experience went. She learned more about Corey, and got some confirmation she hadn’t thought she needed.
On the car ride back to his place, he asked, “So, how’d it go?”
She took a breath. “I think it went really well. I really liked all of your family. They are very…outspoken.”
He huffed. “Yeah, that’s one way of putting it.” He calmed a little and smiled sincerely at her. “They really liked you, too.”
“I’m glad.”
At that, they stopped and looked at one another for a brief few seconds. Although their relationship had seemed like a fantasy when she first met him, it was becoming more and more real for her. The more their lives blended, the more permanent their relationship felt.
Air’s cell buzzed, making her jump and turn away from her boyfriend. Trying not to be fearful of her own intense emotions radiating off of her, she shakily took out her phone from her purse. The text message that flashed on the screen made her torso constrict.
“DO NOT BE THE OTHER WOMAN. YOU WON’T WIN.”
Air read it multiple times just to make sure she understood it correctly.
“What is it?” Corey asked. “You look like you’re going to be sick.”
Air turned to him…the man who had many girlfriends in the past…and she couldn’t breathe for a moment.
“Air?”
“Are you dating someone right now?”
“Uh, you.”
“I’m serious, Corey.”
“No, of course not.” His face twisted with disgust and he glanced at her. “Why would you ask that? Because of what my sisters said? I told you, I am in love with you. You’re different, and I—”
Air held her phone up to him and gave him a few seconds to read the text.
“I swear,” he said slowly, his voice a little deeper and choked, “you are the only one for me. I don’t care how cliché it sounds, it’s true. I love you. I don’t want anyone else.”
Air brought the phone back to herself and stared down at it. Gnawing at her lip, she felt herself calm as her mind went on to ponder this text. If it wasn’t about Corey, could it be a wrong number?
“I don’t even recognize the number,” Corey continued.
“I believe you,” she said. She swallowed and winced, her eyes darting between him and the phone. “I’m sorry that I just…it’s been a tough couple of weeks.”
He grimaced. “You mean ever since you started dating me?”
She would have laughed if he hadn’t looked so hurt. “No, no, nothing like that. My apartment keeps getting vandalized, and I’ve gotten some weird spam from my email. All for this weird dating website…”
“Someone’s harassing you?”
Air frowned at her phone. “I guess.”
“Have you called the police?”
“That’s what Shandra said we should do, but I don’t know. I think it’s just a bunch of stupid kids being…well, being stupid.”
“I don’t like it,” Corey said seriously, his grip on the steering wheel visibly tightening.
